Choosing the proper clothing and shoes to run in can be
as simple or as complex as you choose to make it. The
reality of running is that the most important piece of equipment
you can spend your time and money investing in is a
good pair of running shoes.
Years ago athletic shoes were "sneakers".
Today, athletic shoes are a billion dollar a year industry. |
Shoes
No one can decide which shoe will work
best for you but you do need a shoe with good support for the safety
of your legs and feet. Be sure that you begin your training in
a shoe designed for running. Trying to train in shoes manufactured
for tennis or aerobics or other sports won’t serve your needs.
If you are purchasing new shoes you will need to go and try a number
of styles and/or brands before you make a decision. How a shoe
feels to you is the most important aspect of your purchase. Remember
you are looking for a training shoe. When you go to try on shoes
bring a pair of socks that you will wear while running and if you wear
orthodics bring those with you as well. Most stores will let you
put a pair of shoes on and allow you to run around a bit to see how
they feel. Expensive models are not always the best. A moderately
priced shoe will give you ample support and serve your needs quite adequately.

Socks
All socks are NOT created equal. Stick
with white athletic socks at whatever height you are comfortable in.
Large, bulky, sloppy socks tend to cause blisters which will cause you
to interrupt your training very quickly. Some socks are available
with lycra which helps avoiding blisters.

Sports Bra
Good support is important for your comfort
while you are working out. Although sports bras do give you good
support and are comfortable you may find that you are just as comfortable
in your everyday bra. A little experimenting will let you know
whether you need additional support. If it works for you, wear
it!

Clothing
What you wear will depend upon you, the temperature
outside, the time of day, and the pace you are running during your training.
Loose fitting and comfortable top and bottoms are the way to go and
can probably be found within your existing wardrobe (or that of your
kids!)
The basics:
Warm weather
· Shorts (lose fitting to avoid chaffing or lycra, biking type)
· t-shirt
Cool weather
· Tights, wind pants, sweat pants (stay away from heavy weight) can
be layered over shorts
· Long sleeve t-shirt or wind top
Cold weather- (also for morning or evening)
· Add additional layers as needed to cool weather suggestions
· Hats or headbands (cover the ears) – important to prevent heat
loss from the body
· Gloves

Night Running
If you must run at night wear some type of
reflective clothing. Many shoes come with strips already on them
which reflect in the dark. A reflective vest is easy to throw
over your head to be sure you are seen by traffic.
